Jane Whitehurst was born is California’s Central Valley. A lifelong painter and sculptor, Jane’s creative vision and sense of color and form have rendered an eclectic resume of accomplishments. Jane’s paintings and sculptures have been exhibited and collected nationwide. After having worked on several mediums, Jane’s favorite is abstract painting for its spontaneous expression from what she refers to as her “Basic Self”.
“Abstract painting appeals to me because I can express myself through color, line, scale and texture. The viewer, young or old can read the work through their emotional response to these elements.” Much of her work is from a spontaneous flow in response to music. “My hand responds as if dancing across the canvas. When I step back, I see areas that need to be enhanced or taken away.”
Jane studied art at the Glassell School of Art in Houston, Texas and interior design and sculpture at California State University Fresno, California. She has served on the Board of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Texas and on the Fresno Art Museum Board in Fresno, California. She was an author of the Art Policy for the City of Fresno and served as president of Gallery 25, the first women’s cooperative art gallery in the United States. Jane was a founding member of the Downtown Artists Group, DAG, and co-creator of “ArtHop”, the largest art event in Central California for over 29 years.
